STEERING Technology

SAF-HOLLAND offers two types of steering axles for trailers: Self-tracking steering axles that track themselves from the offset of the steering pin center and the tire contact patch using the adhesion resistance between the tire and the road, and forced steering axles that are controlled with a steering force from the relative movement between the towing and towed vehicle.

The tires are one of the significant cost factors on the towed vehicle. Their wear depends on various factors, such as the speed of the semitrailer, the wheel load or the road surface.

Wear can´t be avoided, but it can be reduced, for example, through suitable chassis settings: If the wheels are aligned with the center of the curve, friction and tractive effort requirements are reduced. This extends the service life of the tires and saves fuel.

To achieve this, the steering axles are individually adapted to the vehicle concept: With its modular system of suitable components - from sensitized kingpins to steering wedges and ball races to steering axles - SAF-HOLLAND demonstrates its expertise in wear-friendly steering technology in the trailer sector.
